 MISSION STATEMENT

Women's basketball has experienced unprecedented growth in the past 25 years.  Opportunities for young women in basketball have expanded at all levels.  Legions of young girls pick up a basketball for the first time each year and "fall in love" with the game.  They bring energy and enthusiasm to the game, and thanks to the tireless efforts of youth league, AAU, and high school coaches, these young girls advance through the different levels of play, chasing their "basketball dreams."

However, speak to any coach - of any level (including boys coaches) and ask them what the biggest challenge they encounter each year is, and the answer is the same - poor fundamental skills.  In their rush to teach the game, coaches often move right to X's and O's, and young players increasingly spend more time playing games than learning skills.

The Basketball Place, Inc. and its programs are designed to address this very problem.  Training programs will be developed and refined to systematically teach, review, and reinforce the fundamental skills of basketball and then build the transition to implementing those skills into competitive situations.  Further, programs in coaching education will be directed to youth and developmental league coaches to assist them in the development of their coaching skills.  AAU and high school coaches may also benefit from programs of instruction for use with their players.  By involving the talents and passions of our local high school coaches as teachers, and utilizing a systematic and evolving curriculum, The Basketball Place endeavors to improve the teaching of, and foster the emergence of, strong fundamental basketball skills in girls basketball, in the Northern Virginia area.

  OBJECTIVES

* To provide fundamental skill instruction in small group or individual settings to girls ages 12 - 18.

* To provide instruction that bridges the gap between rote memorization of step by step skills to integration of those skills to competitive situations.

* To provide each player with the opportunity to maximize their skills and realize their "Basketball Dreams."

* To provide older players with a resource (in cooperation and conjunction with their high school coaches) for academic and athletic guidance in the college selection and recruiting process.

* To provide a resource for local youth league coaches through consultation and clinics to assist and enhance the skill development of young players.

* To provide an advisory organization for high school coaches to contribute to the development of girls basketball in Northern Virginia.
